Drone Videos of Trains

A lot of railfanner's, us included, are starting to use quadcopters to video trains. What an amazing perspective this gives us!

Take a look at each of the original UP heritage units as they aren't only in the consist of trains, but leading each and every one of them. This compilation of videos was taken over the course of a couple of years between 2017 and 2019 on my quest to capture each unit leading its own train. This is not all of the Union Pacific Heritage fleet, but they are the original 6 SD70ACe's that pay tribute to railroads long gone. Take a look at a special train through Pengra Pass in the Oregon Cascades. The UP1943 Veterans unit lead the train from Eugene Oregon to Roseville California this day. It left Eugene early morning which gave great morning light through the mountains. Locations in the video are between Dougren in Pleasant Hill and Cruzatte. This is the first time UP1943 lead an officer special train along this line so it was well overdue and had waited over a year now for it to make that specific trip. It has only been through here once before when it was touring around with the UP4141 George Bush unit. All footage taken from a DJI Phantom 4 Pro.

East Saugatuck, MI -- 24 August, 2017 It's Q326, and today's it's another heavy one. With 14,000 tons of train - over 10,000 feet in fact - to get up the formidable Saugatuck Grade, CSX dispatched manned helpers in the form of D802 to assist in the ascent. Crews in this area are used to this procedure, as any train over 10,000 tons much be shoved or doubled up the hill. So midway up the hill, at the 133rd Ave underpass which dates all the way back to 1908, the drone is in the air, to capture the train's twisting ascent from the Kalamazoo River Valley.
